The tumor involves the mucosa and superficial submucosa. Early squamous cell carcinoma is defined as a carcinoma confined to the mucosa or mucosa and submucosa with or without regional lymph node involvement. The five-year survival rate in patients with early esophageal carcinoma is about 75%.
